Phoenix, Arizona and its suburbs make up a large world-class city rising from a desert valley.
Long before the rest of the country was being colonized, native Americans lived at Pueblo Grande from 700 to 1400 A.D. These ‘Hohokam’, meaning the ‘people who have gone’, built 135 miles of canals to irrigate their farming. Modern settlement began in 1868, when a canal was built to bring water from the Salt River. Several names were used before deciding on ‘Phoenix’, symbolizing a new town rising from the ruins of a former civilization.
Incorporated in 1881, Phoenix is young by historical standards but now ranks as one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. Visitors, residents and businesses will find that Phoenix offers just about everything in the way of sports, recreation, arts, culture, dining, lodging and financial opportunities. Because of our beautiful weather, activities can be enjoyed year-round. Take time to explore the related links on the right for shortcuts to popular topics. The metropolitan area, including Scottsdale, Mesa and Tempe, totals over 2.2 million. There is a Spanish and Mexican influence with architecture, dining and culture. The area is one of the world’s top 5 golf destinations and also has many world-class resorts, spas, dining and shopping.
Downtown Phoenix has an Art Museum, Science Museum, the Heard Museum, historic Copper Square, Phoenix Zoo, and Pueblo Grande ruins. Nearby is the Rawhide Western Town, hot-air balloon rides, jeep tours to the desert, horse riding, the Superstition Mountains of the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine fame, golf, night life, and much more.
